The fashion industry is finally making a comeback after a long wait due to the pandemic. Runway shows and fashion weeks are once again becoming a reality, and as a founder of an alternative floral designer and event planning company I couldn’t be more thrilled!
Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in African Fashion Week, where I showcased my beautiful centrepieces. It was a dream come true! My very good friend Mary Martin, the renowned fashion designer behind Mary Martin London approached me with a fantastic opportunity to create stunning centrepieces with a Red and Gold theme for the BHLA Awards!
Prestigious African icons, including Queen Ronke, founder of the AFWL and King Smade event planner and promoter and top designers like Ozwald Boateng, Duro Olowu and Maki Oh, attended the event. Boateng is known for impeccable craftsmanship and innovative designs, while Olowu mixes prints with modern silhouettes. Maki Oh combines traditional hand-dying techniques with modern tailoring to create feminine yet powerful garments.
Preparing before the awards
My focus was on designing unique pieces that truly captured the essence of natural beauty. The first design featured a tall, rounded bouquet of deep roses elegantly displayed atop gold vases. For the second design, I opted for low black vases with a striking contrast of vivid red roses, adding a touch of boldness to the arrangement.
Finally, I created a low, rustic display using authentic logs, adorned with delicate bunches of roses on either side, complemented by the warm glow of three candles placed in between. These designs are a true reflection of my commitment to authenticity and my passion for creating captivating floral arrangements that leave a lasting impression.
To create the perfect combination of simple and elegant designs with a dramatic effect, I used recessed red artificial roses on tall, slender vases of LED flickering lights for safety precautions. The shade of red with hints of gold bought the drama, while the vases represented elegance and class. Mission accomplished!
Strategically placing three different designs throughout the room complemented the theme of the event and made an impact. I ensured that I perfected the look for my first high profile client! Though I was a little nervous and overwhelmed, I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity. I was also able to carry out work on the logistics side of the event with an amazing lady named Jade Fletcher, the beauty and brains behind Jade Green Productions who made me feel at home whilst doing what I love.
It was incredible to be surrounded by fellow entrepreneurs selling their products in various rooms. The atmosphere was charged with excitement! The models were busy getting their makeup done and changing into different outfits, while other activities were taking place simultaneously.
After the show, I had the opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs over a lovely 5-star meal at the Meat and Wine Company. I was able to capture moments that I will always cherish!
